Blacks on US Currency

On view February 2017 - January 2018

Positive representation of free Black people on commemorative currency is one of the earliest forms of public recognition of Black excellence, contribution and value. The anti-slavery tokens, commemorative coins, concept coins, bronze medals, Presidential bronze medals and gold medallions featured in this exhibition celebrate Black icons, seminal historic events and institutions which have shaped Black history and significantly influenced American history. This exhibit was on loan from the Museum of UnCut Funk and was supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the City Council.
