Museum Finance Academy at NYPL

The Museum Finance Academy (MFA) at NYPL is a FREE virtual four session personal finance course for high school and college-age students with the goal of teaching teens to aspire to financial independence through developing an appreciation for savings, establishing financial goals and learning to avoid scams. This course requires no prior knowledge of finance, business or economics.

The series kicks off on Wednesday, July 5 at 12:00pm (ET) and continues each Wednesday at noon through July 26, 2023. Each program builds on the knowledge gained from the previous session!

All sessions are run in partnership with the Museum of American Finance (MoAF) and the New York Public Library’s Thomas Yoseloff Business Center. They are taught by MoAF Educator Chris Meyers over Zoom. Register for each program separately below.

Session 1: “Money Is a Tool; Discover How It Works”
Date: Wednesday, July 5, 12-1:15pm
Description: In this session, students will gain an understanding of the history and value of money over time and will identify sources of income.

Session 2: “Wealth vs. Income”
Date: Wednesday, July 12, 12-1:15pm
Description: In this session, students will be introduced to the importance of savings, the power of compounding and strategies for the accumulation of wealth.

Session 3: “How to Improve Income Over Time”
Date: Wednesday, July 19, 12-1:15pm
Description: This session focuses on how wages are determined and what factors most influence income, as well as the impact education has on wealth.

Session 4: “Education: Cost vs. Benefit”
Date: Wednesday, July 26, 12-1:15pm
Description: The final session delves into the cost of education, the impact post-secondary degrees can have on income, life cycle expenses, discretionary vs. non-discretionary spending and how to achieve work/life balance.
