Charles Ponzi, Ivar Kreuger and Bernie Madoff are part of a rogue’s gallery that will be highlighted in this talk by Marc Hodak, an expert in corporate governance and its sometime spectacular failures. The rise of finance capitalism has, perhaps inevitably, been accompanied at every step by financial scandals. On the one hand, the behaviors behind scandals are regrettable; they create misery for their victims, and reveal the dark side of our society. On the other hand, our peculiar fascination with stories about betrayal of trust provide lasting lessons for individuals and institutions about what to watch out for. In a sense, the scandals that have accompanied our market’s evolution have also helped it evolve.
Hodak is founder and managing director of Hodak Value Advisors and teaches a class on corporate and financial scandals at the NYU Stern School of Business. He is the guest curator of the Museum’s exhibit, “Scandal! Financial Crime, Chicanery and Corruption that Rocked America.”
