Daron Acemoglu on "Power and Progress: Our Thousand-Year Struggle Over Technology and Prosperity" Friday, December 1, 2023 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM
A thousand years of history and contemporary evidence make one thing clear: progress depends on the choices we make about technology. New ways of organizing production and communication can either serve the narrow interests of an elite or become the foundation for widespread prosperity. Join us for a presentation by MIT Economics Professor Daron Acemoglu, co-author of Power and Progress, as he demonstrates that the path of technology was once—and may again be—brought under control. The authors’ bold reinterpretation of economics and history in this groundbreaking book provide the vision needed to redirect innovation so it again benefits most people.

Award-winning financial journalist Diana Henriques speaks on her latest book, Taming the Street: The Old Guard, the New Deal and FDR's Fight to Regulate American Capitalism. Henriques describes how President Franklin D. Roosevelt battled to regulate Wall Street in the wake of the 1929 stock market crash and the ensuing Great Depression. She takes the audience back to a time when America’s financial landscape was a jungle ruled by the titans of vast wealth, largely unrestrained by government.
